Honoring a Legacy. Expanding a Universe.

BEGST proudly introduces the McNair HBCU Observatory, a transformative initiative created in honor of Dr. Ronald E. McNair—the brilliant physicist, astronaut, and pioneer whose life and legacy continue to inspire generations. Though he was tragically lost in the 1986 Space Shuttle Challenger accident, his unwavering pursuit of knowledge lives on through this groundbreaking project.

Nestled beneath the crystal-clear skies of Arizona’s desert horizon, the McNair Observatory will become the first dedicated astronomical research complex designed specifically to elevate STEM opportunities at HBCUs nationwide.

This state-of-the-art facility will give HBCU students and faculty unprecedented access to the universe, offering tools, technology, and training once limited to elite research institutions.

What the Observatory Will Feature

  • Two fully robotic telescopes operable remotely by HBCU science and technology departments across the country

  • A third on-site telescope reserved exclusively for hands-on research conducted by student interns

  • A modern seminar and collaboration room for lectures, research meetings, and NASA-affiliated programming

  • Two student dormitories, accommodating up to eight interns specializing in astrophotography, spectroscopy, and observational science

A Launchpad for Discovery

This observatory is more than a facility, it's an opportunity generator.

From mapping distant galaxies to searching for exoplanets, HBCU students and researchers will engage in cutting-edge projects, including NASA-supported missions that push the boundaries of what we know about our universe.

And the impact goes far beyond observation. BEGST will provide support for developing new astronomy and astrophysics courses, empowering HBCUs to expand their curriculum and cultivate future astronomers, engineers, physicists, and space scientists.
The McNair HBCU Observatory exists to spark those dreams,
to open the sky,
to open opportunities,
and to open the next chapter of Black excellence in global science and technology.
